Thomes Limited is North America’s largest importer and supplier of Baltic birch plywood. Native to Northeastern Europe around the Baltic Sea, Baltic birch offers a higher level of strength and stability than standard birch plywood. Baltic birch plywood not only features very few voids but it is also made without any softwood or filler plies.

Poplar is generally softer than European Baltic birch. Poplar has a Janka hardness rating around 540 lbf, while Baltic birch typically falls between 1,200 and 1,350 lbf. This means Baltic birch is significantly harder and more durable than poplar. Due to its durability and attractive, consistent grain pattern, Baltic birch was originally manufactured for European cabinetmaking.

Unlike traditional plywood, Baltic birch plywood products feature thin inner plies, each typically no more than 1.5 mm thick. For example, a ¾” (18 mm) thick piece of Baltic birch plywood has 13 equal plies, compared to 5 to 7 plies on a competing product of the same thickness. This means that each piece of Baltic plywood is constructed from more laminated, cross-banded plies to create a given thickness. In addition, Baltic birch face plies are 1.5 mm thick, providing more material for sanding than competing products. The result is a stiff and stable material that’s ideal for diverse woodworking projects.

Commercial Vehicle Flooring

Commercial Vehicle Flooring

The commercial vehicle industry often uses Baltic birch plywood to construct truck, van, and trailer decking. To transport and store heavy loads, these commercial vehicles need sturdy, high-quality decking. Baltic plywood is strong and wear-resistant yet naturally lightweight, making it ideal for these applications. Thomes Ltd. provides a range of commercial vehicle flooring products designed with these demands in mind.

Baltic Birch Plywood for Vehicles

Due to its lightweight yet durable nature, Baltic birch plywood is an ideal choice for manufacturing vehicle components. Thomes Ltd. supplies plywood products for numerous air, land, and sea transportation applications.

Concrete Forms

Concrete Forms

Concrete formwork holds concrete in place until it hardens into its intended shape. While there are many types of concrete forms to choose from, Baltic birch plywood offers many unique advantages. Our Baltic birch concrete forms feature a phenolic coating that withstands humidity, rot, and repeated use. The coating also provides a stick-free surface for defect-free removals to achieve the desired finish along the concrete’s surface. Based on feedback from end users, the concrete form can be reused around 100 times for formwork of walls and around 30 times for floors or ceilings.

Phenolic Plywood

Film-faced plywood is covered on both sides with a phenolic resin paper. During the manufacturing process, the resin firmly adheres to the plywood, creating a durable, water-resistant film. This type of plywood is easy to work with for construction, marine, and automotive-related applications. Our Hexa option features a hexagonal pattern that is ideal for slip prevention as well as decorative flooring applications.

Phenolic Plywood

We also offer melamine-coated plywood in various sizes, thicknesses, and colors. These products have a smooth, glossy, and hygienic finish that is easy to clean. The edges feature an acrylic sealant that minimizes moisture ingress.

Anti-Slip Plywood

Anti-Slip Plywood

Our anti-slip plywood is treated with a durable adhesive surface coating to protect the wood from damage while minimizing the risk of falls in slippery conditions. The plywood is overlaid with a hard-wearing film with various patterns and textures, combining both functionality and aesthetic visual appearance.

Aircraft Birch Plywood

Thomes Ltd. is a trusted importer of aircraft plywood. Produced by our manufacturing partner in Finland, aircraft Baltic birch plywood meets rigorous performance standards. Our Baltic birch plywood sizes and other specifications include:

  • Phenolic resin glue to give the plywood boilproof and weatherproof properties
  • Thicknesses between 0.4 mm (3 ply) to 10 mm (20 ply)
  • Standard sheet size of 50” x 50”
  • Additional sizes of 48” x 48”, 60” x 60”, and custom sizes

Boat Decking

Boat Decking

In the boating industry, aesthetics, comfort, and environmental protection all play an important role in material selection. Our boat decking products are often used to construct durable and attractive decking and transoms, as Baltic birch plywood is compatible with a range of surface treatments.

With anti-rot and fungicide treatment, our Baltic birch plywood is protected from natural moisture. These surface treatments add longevity and durability to the decking, helping it endure years of heavy foot traffic. We also offer anti-slip plywood products with a mesh traction surface coating to prevent slips and injuries.

FAQs

The biggest advantages of Baltic birch plywood are its smooth face with minimal voids, excellent stability, and attractive appearance. Since it is sturdy and excellent at holding screws, it’s an ideal choice for furniture-making and cabinetry.

There are several differences between Baltic birch plywood and domestic or traditional birch. For example, traditional veneer core plywood has many voids and is often made by adding softer materials to increase density. In comparison, Baltic birch features a virtually void-free core and is constructed from many thin, high-quality birch plies. These thin, stacked plies create a more durable panel that can withstand high impact and carry heavy loads. Its uniform layers also create sturdy joints with maximum glue coverage since there are no voids.

Baltic birch is a great option for precision CNC machining, cutting, and engraving due to the material’s smooth surface texture and consistent, void-free core.

Baltic birch plywood is not waterproof. However, due to the waterproof adhesives that are used in its construction, Baltic birch is water-resistant. To produce Baltic birch plywood, manufacturers bond thin layers of birch veneer using a waterproof glue that can endure exposure to humidity and moisture. This makes the plywood suitable for applications that involve exposure to wet conditions, like marine, cabinetry, and outdoor projects.
